Peace has been restored in Madhya Pradesh at last, but at the cost of party's loss of faith in Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan who despite his good intentions to cull farmer's agitation could not prevent the firing that resulted in six deaths and a blot on his government.

Chouhan adopted the Gandhian philosophy of observing fast to pacify the farmers on a warpath. The fast by the Chief Minister, however well-intentional, hasn't gone down well with the party high command which has apparently baulked at the idea of Gandhi-giri that was undertaken with a view to curb violence from spreading to other parts of the state. Instead of earning goodwill of the people and a pat on his back from the BJP high command, the plan emulating Mahatma Gandhi backfired and positioned his identity politics closer to that of the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal who has already been rejected by his constituents in recently concluded MCD polls. What's worse is that he continues to lose ground as his detractors are busy painting a very deceptive and negative picture of his in the eyes of the BJP's Central leadership.

A rioting mob has to be tackled with force sometimes resulting in 'fire for fire' situation that was recently witnessed in Madhya Pradesh. But restoring law and order is the duty of the government and the Chouhan government took it upon itself to do so from Day 1, but his detractors and the Opposition, mainly the Congress, aggravated the already precarious situation. It started with mud slinging and blaming the CM for the incident, which he surely did not want. The detractors also sent out a word that the party will suffer because of the farmer's agitation in the forthcoming Gujarat election, which is a prestige issue for the party leadership. Since the firing in the Malwa region, the Central leadership has been led to believe that Chouhan had miserably failed to contain the farmers' agitation. Chouhan started losing ground in the eyes of the party's leadership in Delhi which continues even after peace has been restored.

The Chief Minister to his great surprise came under severe criticism when he announced a 'relief amount' of Rs one crore each to the families of all the deceased. This generous announcement was criticised as not only a bad precedent for compensation, but also as one that would financially burden the BJP ruled states.

Also, Chouhan, despite his three terms as chief minister, failed to convince both the farmers and the party leaders that when no interest was imposed on the loans, where was the question of waiving them off. Chouhan, now, faces a Herculean task, first to regain the lost ground, and then rebuild himself in the esteem of the party's Central leadership. It's a pathetic political situation for a person credited with wiping out the Congress from the state.
