This is a murder mystery that Agatha Christie or Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would have been proud of writing. The Delhi police managed to solve a nine-year-old murder case thanks to a lucky tip-off, as reported in The Times of India.

The story began in 2006 when a 16-year-old Aarti fell in love with a boy who lived in her neighbourhood in Sultanpuri, West Delhi. They dated for two years and when she turned 18, moved in together.

Aarti’s parents did not object as they saw that their daughter was happy. Initially, things were wonderful. The boy, Brijender alias Rinku, showered Aarti with gifts and flowers.

Somewhere in September 2008, however, trouble began to brew for the couple and they began fighting over petty things.

Things took a turn for the worst when Aarti went missing at the end of the month.

A few days later Aarti’s parents received a letter saying that she had fallen in love with another man and had eloped with him. She asked them not to get in touch with her, as she had left Delhi. This was a shock to the parents, which eventually resulted in Aarti’s father falling ill due to the shock and dying a few years later.

Rinku also moved on after selling his house and moving to Aman VIhar. He even married a girl from Patel Nagar a year later. In his first partner’s memory, he started calling his wife Aarti. They have three children, aged seven, five, and two.

The lead

On April 11 this year, the Delhi crime branch reived a tip-off about the involvement of a man named Rahul in a murder that took place eight years ago.

The police nabbed Rahul, who confessed that Rinku was the mastermind behind Aarti’s death.

The confession

Police then arrested Riku who confessed to the crime. He said that Rinku was fed of the fights between him and Aarti and finally strangled her to death on September 23, 2008. Before this, he took her signatures on a blank paper. The reason he gave her for the signatures was not revealed.

After killing her, Rinku hired an auto and sat with Aarti’s body. He convinced the auto driver that she was under the influence of black magic and was taking her to Najafgarh for exorcism.

On reaching Najafgarh, Rinku called Rahul to dispose the body. Before dumping it in the bushes, they smashed the face with stones to hide her identity, the police said.

The body was recovered a day later but it could never be identified. Police cremated the body later as per procedure.

After a few days had passed, Rinku sent the fake letter to Aarti's father through a tea vendor. The signature on the letter was real as it was written on the blank paper which Aarti had signed before her death.

Rinku has also told cops that he started calling his second wife Aarti so that no one asked or searched for her in his colony as many people knew about their affair.

After Rinku’s confession, the police brought out the inquest report of the corpse that was found eight years ago. They approached Aarti’s mother in Sultanpuri, who confirmed that she had a tattoo of the letter A on her right hand.
