For any government to run successfully it is important to have the confidence of the citizens. And the Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is 3rd on the list with 73 per cent of citizens having confidence in it, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) latest Government at a Glance report.

Even though the Modi-led government is being attacked by the Opposition on several fronts, India is one the top countries that has the citizen’s confidence.
The report said that the government trust levels are generally determined by whether or not people consider their government stable and reliable. The survey had only one question, “Do you have confidence in national government?” to which one could only answer with ‘yes’ or ‘no’.

The OECD governance report compares the data of 2016 with that of 2007. And despite the Modi-led government’s strong presence in the present list, it has lost 9 per cent confidence as compared to the 2007 data.
India, however, has experienced a high annual growth rate in real GDP under the Modi government.  The country’s growth rate rose from 6.5 per cent in 2013 to 7.9 per cent in 2015, although growth slowed to 6.8 per cent in 2016.
Indonesia and Switzerland topped the list each with 80 per cent confidence. After India, it was Justin Trudeau-led Canada with 62 per cent confidence, followed by Turkey and Russia in the top five.

However, only 30 per cent United States citizens have faith in their President Donald Trump’s government.
