Five young men from Palghar died in a road mishap while returning from their friend's wedding on Wednesday morning. The driver, Viraj Vettal, was allegedly drunk and lost control, thus colliding with a large banyan tree. The impact was such that the airbags, which were released, burst.

According to Satpati police, Vettal (25) was at the wheel of the car, ferrying his friends Tarapur-resident Nikesh Tamore (25), Vadrai-resident Kiran Pagdhare (30), Satpati-resident Dipesh Pagdhare (25), and Khanpada-resident Santosh Bahiram (37).

Vettal ran his family's transportation business, while Tamore and Pagdhare worked with him. Pagdhare and Bahiram worked in a private company at Boisar. All of them were related. He lost control at around 3.30 am on Satpati Road.

"We had seen them all dancing at the function," said Sanjay Tamore, Nikesh's uncle. "We were shocked when we heard about the accident. All the other wedding functions have been cancelled. It's a sad day for the families and the parents are depressed."

"The impact was such that the car was completely mangled," said a police officer. "All five died on the spot. The locals rushed them to the rural hospital but they were declared dead before admission."

Locals saw Vettal steer to the left to avoid the tree, which is when the airbags popped out; but the impact was such that they were rendered useless. "The airbags burst due to impact. The entire windshield was mangled," said Mansing Patil, incharge of Satpati police station, "We have registered a case under section 304(A) (causing death due to negligence), 279(rash driving), 337(Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others)and 338 (Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code and under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicle Act against Vettal (deceased). The driver had been drinking during the wedding celebrations. The statements of those present at the wedding have been taken and we are awaiting post-mortem reports."
