In action against bootlegging in dry state Bihar, Patna (central) range DIG Shalin on Friday ordered for immediate removal of the entire staff of Beur police station in the state capital for allegedly shielding illegal liquor trade in their jurisdiction.

Acting on the directive, Patna SSP Manu Maharaaj passed the necessary orders in which 40 cops (sub inspector, assistant SI and constables) and staff — from the station house officer (SHO) to constables have been removed from Beur PS, police sources said.

All the accused have been shunted to the police lines. "The action is based on specific information about illicit liquor trade in Beur PS area and allegations of connivance of local cops in shielding it," DIG Shalin told the DNA.

Shalin added, "Prima facie, the allegations seem to have some basis and appear true. Hence, I have directed Patna City SP (West) Ravindra Kumar to make an inquiry into the matter. Pending that inquiry, administrative action has been taken to remove them from Beur PS and shunt them to police lines."

On all uniformed and non-uniformed men being removed from the PS, Shalin said, "It is but natural that to ensure a free and fair probe, all personnel accused in the matter should be removed. We are committed to implementing the Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act 2016, and if police officials themselves are found failing in their duty or showing a laid-back attitude, severe action will be taken against them."

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had imposed total liquor prohibition in the state on April 5, 2016. Police sources said initial action was taken not because of any particular incident but because of repeated omissions and further action — disciplinary and punitive action may be taken after the submission of final inquiry report by Patna City SP (West) Kumar.

It may be recalled that in a similar manner in August last year, all cops of Gopalganj town PS had been suspended by the state government after Khajurbani hooch tragedy in which at least 16 people had lost their lives. However, their suspension was revoked shortly after sustained agitation by the police association.
