2 girls die, seven other pilgrims injured in road accident

Two girls were killed and seven other pilgrims, including four minors, injured when the jeep they were travelling in collided with a truck on Phagwara- Chandigarh bypass here, the police said today.

Members of two families from Sanghel village in Fatehgarh Sahib district were last night on their way to pilgrimage at Radha Swami Satsang Dera Baba Jaimal Singh Beas, SHO Lakhvir Singh said.

The pilgrims halted at local Radha Swami Satsang Ghar along the bypass.

The jeep driver started driving on the wrong side of the road when they resumed their journey which led to a collision near Khalwara village crossing with the truck, which was going to Chandigarh from Hoshiarpur, he said.

Kiran (14) and Puja (8) were killed in the incident while the four injured, including two girls, have been admitted to a hospital here, the officer said, adding one Lucky, who was seriously injured, was later referred to a Jalandhar hospital.

A case was registered against both the drivers on the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash driving or driving on a public way, causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others, the SHO said.

While jeep driver Mohinder Singh was arrested, the truck driver escaped leaving his vehicle behind, he said.
