A day after the CBI sought death penalty for him, 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict Mustafa Dossa died due to cardiac arrest at the state-run JJ Hospital on Wednesday afternoon. Dossa was admitted to the hospital at around 3 am on Tuesday after he complained of chest pain.

According to doctors at the hospital, he also suffered from high fever, hypertension and diabetes.

TP Lahane, Dean of JJ Hospital, said, "Dossa was admitted to the jail ward of the hospital at 3 am. We also conducted ECG test on him in the morning. He already had high fever. He was shifted to the ICCU after a severe heart attack. At 11.30 am he suffered a cardiac arrest."

"Our doctors tried to save his life for three hours, but they couldn't. He died at 2.30 pm. Final cause of death will be announced after the postmortem report is out," he added.

Dossa's relatives and friends gathered at the hospital soon after they learnt of his death. He is survived by a wife, two daughters and three sons.

A relative, who did not wish to be named, said, "We all were all offering namaz when we got the news on the phone. Everyone started visiting the hospital to get more details."

Dossa's body was taken for a postmortem at around 5.30 pm. A nephew said, "The formalities at the hospital are done. We will be taking his body to his home in Agripada, where the family members will be performing his last rites. His body will be taken to Bada Kabristan at Marine Lines for the burial." (Reporter to update by 10.30 if the burial is happening tonight)

A day earlier, the prosecution told the a special Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) court in Mumbai that Dossa was an "archer" in part-B, referring to the case against seven accused who were arrested after the trial against 123 accused had already begun.

According to the prosecution, Dossa was one of the masterminds behind the blasts conspiracy, and "his degree of responsibility towards the commission of the crime was the highest." Seeking the death penalty for Dossa, CBI counsel Deepak Salve had argued on Tuesday that "if not for him (and other absconders), the crime would never have taken place. This is further cemented by his role of holding the first conspiratorial meeting at Dossa's residence in Dubai, where the first seeds of the design of conspiracy were sowed."

According to the CBI, Dossa had asked his brother Mohammed Dossa to arrange for smuggling of arms and ammunition in Maharashtra. He sent arms and ammunition from Dubai and Pakistan clandestinely into India to open fire and spill the blood of Indians. Some of them were used by Tiger Memon to impart training at Sandheri Hillock, and these were then handed back to Dossa, who concealed them in Agarwada through his men.

Dossa attended a conspiratorial meeting at the residence of Dawood Ibrahim, and took other accused to the meeting at the 'White House' in Dubai. He recruited and collected passports of various co-accused in order to send them to Pakistan and financed their travel. He had also financed the smuggling of arms and ammunition in Maharashtra.
