Joaquin Phoenix has no regrets about passing over the opportunity to play a superhero character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The 43-year-old actor was in negotiations with the Marvel to play the superhero character Doctor Strange in the MCU. But things did not materialise and the role was ultimately bagged by Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch.

Now, in a new interview, Phoenix said that everything worked out for the best for everyone.

"I think they make some great, fun movies. There's nothing wrong... I'm not a snob and I'm totally fine with... I enjoy those movies sometimes, and I think they keep the f**king industry going in some ways, so I don't have a problem with it at all," Phoenix told Little White Lies.

"I think that everybody was, is... I'm trying to figure out how to say this most diplomatically, okay... I think everybody was really happy with how things turned out. All parties were satisfied," he added.

The Her actor is currently in negotiations with Warner Bros and DC Entertainment to play the iconic villain The Joker in a stand-alone film.

He will be next seen in Lynne Ramsay's You Were Never Really Here, for which he won the Best Actor trophy at the Cannes Film Festival last year.
