After six months of wait, a woman in her 50s has finally received a liver. The transplant was done at KEM hospital in Parel. This was the hospital's first liver transplant after a gap of one-and-a-half years.

"When she came to us with an end-stage liver disease, she had just Rs200. She needed a liver transplant but couldn't afford the Rs35 lakh in a private hospital. We put her name on the Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC) waiting list. We are happy that we got the donor on time," said KEM hospital dean Dr Avinash Supe.

The surgery was done last Sunday, after a 53-year-old man from Chiplun was declared brain-dead in KEM hospital. "The donor – Prashant Bagde – was a road accident victim. His family gave consent for the organ donation. His heart and kidneys were not fit for donation," said Supe. He added the woman was recovering well and will be discharged in 2-3 days.

In July 2010, to make liver transplant affordable for the common man, KEM – one of the city's largest public hospital – had made the first attempt to conduct the surgery. The hospital had to stop the programme, however, when both recipient and donor in case died in November 2010.

"We had patients registered for liver transplant but most of them could not afford the procedure. In this case, we managed to gather funds. It has given us a much-needed boost," said Supe. The cost of the transplant at KEM Hospital has been subsidised to about Rs5 lakh.

Meanwhile, the hospital has appointed liver transplant surgeons and hepatologists as consultants to strengthen the liver transplant programme.
