Most people might suffer from kidney stones but are not actually aware of their condition in the initial stages. However, the symptoms are only experienced as the stones grow in size, making it difficult to pass through the ureter. Although dealing with kidney stones can be really painful, here are few foods you should avoid or limit their intake to stay healthy.

Spinach: According to Dr Deepshikha Agarwal, a Mumbai-based dietitian and sports nutritionist, ‘Spinach contains oxalate, which binds calcium to form calcium oxalate crystals or stones while urine is produced by the kidneys. And if you eat more spinach (following kidney stones) you are more likely to aggravate the condition.’ Hence, people with kidney stones are recommended to eat spinach once or twice a week, not more. Here are 8 reasons why boiled vegetables are good for you.

Tomatoes: Another oxalate-rich food which is widely used in Indian food preparations is tomato. However, it is not possible to completely shun this vegetable from your diet as it adds taste and is high in nutrients. So to prevent further worsening of your condition and add taste to your food, remove the seeds from tomatoes while preparing food.

Chocolates: If you have a sweet tooth and have suffered from kidney stones, then chocolates are a strict no-no as they contain oxalates. However, you can consume them once a week or replace chocolates with another sweet to fulfil your craving.

Tea: Do you start your day with a cup of hot tea? Well, it’s fine for normal people to drink tea for their various health benefits. However, people with kidney stones should limit their intake of tea to prevent kidney stones from growing in size and causing various health complications.Read about 6 side-effects of green tea you didn’t know.

Seafood: People suffering from kidney stones have to restrict intake of seafood, meat and other proteinaceous foods as they are rich in compounds called purines. The high purine levels in the body increase the production of uric acid, leading to uric acid stones.

Salty foods: It is important to lower your consumption of salt (or salty foods). This is because salt contains sodium that causes over-excretion of calcium into urine by the kidneys. And this excess calcium can bind to oxalate (from foods) and lead to the formation of kidney stones. Did you know about the 6 common salty foods?

Apart from this, guavas, peanuts, seeds grains, legumes, beetroots and sweet potatoes also contain oxalates in high amounts and thus, their intake has to be strictly monitored. Replacing these foods with healthier ones like lemon juice, water, coconut water and calcium-rich foods prevents recurrence of kidney stones.
