30% Indians tested have high cholesterol: Survey

While Bangalore was leading, Delhi performed poorly in a survey that looked at health and lifestyle of residents.

A survey conducted across five cities - Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata and Chandigarh - has found that three out of every ten Indians tested have high cholesterol levels. Bangalore was leading with a lifestyle score of 71, while Mumbai scored 67. Delhi was the lowest with a score of 65.

The scores were given based on a person's diet, activity levels and overall happiness.

Cholesterol levels were a major concern for Mumbai residents with more than 38% having high cholesterol; more than any other city. One of the key reasons was Mumbaikars eating out often. Almost 59% admitted to skipping meals and only 35% regularly consumed fruits. The consumption of green leafy vegetables was also found to be low in Mumbai.

Those in Bangalore admitted to having the least amount of sleep, with only 32% getting a sound sleep. Delhi at 43% and Mumbai at 38% have the highest proportion of people with an unhealthy lifestyle. Bangalore has the highest proportion of healthy people at 85%.

Survey points to show sedentary lifestyle is affecting residents across cities in India. The study had 586 participants, and while research survey was carried by Nielsen India, the diagnostic survey was conducted by SRL diagnostics.
