If a survey done by a preventive health care organisation in Mumbai is to be believed, 20-25 % of the Mumbaikars are under the risk of oral cancer due to consumption of tobacco. Indus Health Plus, a preventive health check-up organisation, has collected details of people enrolling for their health check up plans from January 2015 to April 2016. The sample size for the study was 35,662 people.

Amol Naikawadi, preventive healthcare specialist of Indus Health Plus, said: "Overall 80% of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) cases are due to tobacco smoking and it is one of the leading causes of deaths in Maharashtra. In Delhi, males in the age group of 30-35 years are more prone to COPD as compared to females."

The report suggests that one in three adults in Mumbai consumes tobacco on a regular basis. Experts shared that if the current pattern continues, one in ten is likely to die of premature death. More than 30% of the population consumes tobacco in the form of cigarettes or gutka. The report also revealed that population in the age group of 35-45 years is at a higher risk of suffering from heart diseases and lung cancer.

"Consumption of tobacco is an emerging social and public health problem and there is a need to sensitize masses towards its ill-effects. We strongly believe that public awareness campaigns will make people conscious and create a positive impact in quitting tobacco," Naikawadi added.

Tobacco consumption has been the major cause of death and illness worldwide. Consumption of tobacco in any form increases the risk of COPD, brain stroke, heart attack, asthma, lung cancer, interstitial lung disease, respiratory disease and diabetes. Indian Council Of Medical Research (ICMR) study states that the consumption of tobacco has been the cause of 30 % of cancer cases in India.
