Frizzy hair solutions

Stewart Harland, international principal hairstylist and expert, Saks Salon gives the lowdown on taming unmanageable hair

Frizzy hair solutions

What is the reason for frizziness?
The main cause is actually lack of moisture. A lot of people think colouring causes it, but it's not true. One should always look for moisture levels in the shampoo they use. Usually shampoos that are specifically meant for dry hair help.

Do frequent blow dries and use of straightening or curling irons also make the hair frizzy?
If the hair lacks moisture, over styling it can cause frizziness. Always make sure you get a blow dry from a professional stylist so that they can use heat protecting products and reduce the damage. Any excessive heat can cause frizz. I would suggest women use a thick hair mask, apply it from the middle to the ends of the hair, and twist into a half bun. Wear this during the day so that the heat of the sun breaks down the moisture molecules. Rinse off at night and you will feel the difference.

What are the available treatments for frizz?
There is the keratin and cysteine treatments that calm the hair, for those looking for a semi-permanent solution. It keeps the hair smooth for 12-18 weeks. Use of good products is essential like a good shampoo, conditioner and hair mask that can be used weekly. Look for key ingredients like white tea, chamomile, nut extracts and natural oils. A serum is important for styling. To get the best out of any product, always apply on your hands first and never directly on the hair or scalp. Use the palms of the hand to massage the scalp rather than the fingers. After washing hair, pat dry with a towel. Avoid using very tight hairbands.

What should those with curly hair do?
I would suggest they mix a bit of hair mask with serum, apply on the hair and twist into ringlets. Let it air dry, and then pin up a few sections. When working with curls, try to air dry as much as possible. Also, use serums and glossy products to add shine.
