The Bajrangi Bhaijaan actress & her family were rendered ill by packaged fruit juice
TV actress Helen Fonseca (you remember her from Bajrangi Bhaijaan, don’t you? Well, she’s back in Raees and Kaabil, so you can take a closer look) has been poisoned. And it’s not just her — her husband and two sons are victims too. But it’s no Agatha Christie job with a rival actor — with an eye on a juicy role — lurking in the shadows. The culprit is the ubiquitous fruit juice that comes in tetra packs.
Fonseca (right) ordered 27 packets of B Natural jamun juice from Everfresh Supermarket in Gorai, and her husband Christopher, a businessman, was the first victim. He was struck down by vomiting and high fever, but the family did not suspect the juice. Then fell 17-year-old Ashish and 25-year-old Kunal. It was only when Fonseca herself drank the juice and started vomiting violently that the family’s attention went to the drink.
“After all four of us fell ill, we found out the juice packets had expired,” says Fonseca. “We contacted the shopkeeper and also complained to the makers through the customer helpline number, but did not get any response.” All four were treated for food poisoning.
Fonseca has escalated the matter to the police: “We have written to the Borivli police. We don’t suspect any tampering by the shopkeeper since we buy from them regularly and this is the first time it has happened.” A senior police officer from Borivli police station confirmed the incident. “We have received the complaint and will call the complainant, and inform Food and Drugs Administration.”
Ramesh Patel, the supermarket’s owner, has his alibi in place and is looking askance at the manufacturer. “After receiving the order from the customer (Fonseca), I told the dealer to deliver it directly to the Fonseca residence.
After the complaints, the dealer has neither replaced the product nor accepted any accountability.” Hopefully, this massive stroke of ill health has not derailed Fonseca’s shooting schedule. She’s currently working on an American-Australian thriller, Hotel Mumbai, with Dev Patel.
