Musical La La Land won big at Britain's main film awards on Sunday as it scooped the prize for best film, while Emma Stone and Damien Chazelle picked up awards for best actress and best director respectively.

It won five gongs in total to keep its hot streak in the movie awards season going before the Oscars later this month, as it also picked up awards for cinematography and original music.

While Stone triumphed, co-star Ryan Gosling lost out in the best actor category to Casey Affleck, for his performance in family drama Manchester by the Sea. Gosling was also notable by his absence, with the film's producers saying he had a family matter to attend to.

Manchester by the Sea picked up two awards in total, with Kenneth Lonergan's picking up an award for original screenplay.

A popular pick among the audience in the Royal Albert Hall, Londoner Dev Patel, 26, won best supporting actor for his performance in Lion, which charts the real-life story of an Indian boy adopted by an Australian couple. The film also won an award for best adapted screenplay.

Viola Davis took home the prize for best supporting actress for her performance in Fences, an adaption of a Pulitzer Prize winning play about the life of a black family in 1950s Pennsylvania.

But this not all that happened during BAFTA 2017. Let's take a look at best moments from the show - 

1. Cirque Du Soleil and Stephen Fry open the show

With Duke and Dutchess of Cambridge Prince William and Kate Middleton as guests of honour, comedian/writer/actor, Stephen Fry hosted the show. A performance by Cirque Du Soleil opened the awards night.

2. Meryl Streep kisses Stephen Fry

Fry explained Meryl Streep the benefit of being a British citizen. 'If you were British, you'd be Dame-d five times over!' Meryl Streep sportingly comes forward to kiss Fry and continue the BAFTA tradition.

And no Mr. Fry, it's not just your left cheek which is jealous. We all are!

3. Spidey for the win! 

Tom Holland, the new Spidey on the block took home the BAFTA for rising star. He was chosen over Ruth Negga, Laia Costa, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Lucas Hedges.

4. Viola Davis talks of heroes whose stories were never told 

Viola Davis won the trophy for best supporting actress for her role in Fences. Continuing her Golden Globes, SAG Awards thread, Davis praised the unsung heroes and August Wilson.

5. Dev Patel finally beats Mahershala Ali 

After returning empty-handed from every other award show because beating Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) is really difficult, Dev Patel finally got one from his peers in Britain.

6. Casey Affleck mumbles again

After losing to Denzel Washington at SAG Awards, Casey Affleck returned to win the next award in the run-up to the Oscars. Affleck praised the screenplay of Manchester by the Sea.

7. Emma Stone fills in Streep's shoes to talk about art transcending borders 

Emma Stone does it again. Her Mia is being praised world over and BAFTA were not exceptions. And because Meryl Streep could not get on the stage since she lost to well, Stone, the latter talked about how arts and performance knows no borders.

8. It's La La Land once again! 

Another win for La La Land. This means from now on, whatever story Damien Chazelle pitches, studios will jump on them. No more waiting for you maestro!

9. Simon Pegg and Nathan Lane introduce Mel Brooks 

Prince William took to stage to present the BAFTA fellowship to veteran actor Mel Brooks. His royal highness was joined by Simon Pegg and Nathan Lane who cracked up the audience with their zingers as they introduced the comic genius.

10. Mel Brooks is everything!
