Arjun Rampal’s had two back-to-back releases this year—Rock On 2 and Kahaani 2. He says he’s in a different mindspace currently. He’s launched the first look of Daddy,  a dark, gritty entertainer. We ask Arjun if it’s because of his kids growing up that he’s now doing more meaningful cinema. What follows is a short chat on his film choices and his kids Myra and Mahikaa..

‘Film’s the hero for me’

“In the last five years, I have picked subjects which are high on content. I wanted to do meaningful cinema. I wouldn’t do a film which my heart was not in. And I’m not doing it to help anybody. If the script demands me to put up a strong role, I will only do it then. The film’s the hero for me. The other people including myself who get attached to it are just the pieces in the puzzle which will come together the way it should.

‘Nothing to do with my children’

It has nothing to do with my children. Don’t give them so much credit. (Laughs) But of course, you want your children, your family to be proud of what you do. There are times when you just want to take a break from everything and go away, tune into the real world and see what it’s about, you refuel yourself. When you come back, you do so with a fresh approach a fresh mind and automatically, that reflects in the work you do. It takes time to get it right sometimes. The whole process has to be refreshing.

‘Not doctors, lawyers or engineers’

I don’t know if they are going to do films in general. But both their parents are from the entertainment industry and from creative mindspace, so I guess they will be more inclined to going in that area as opposed to becoming doctors, lawyers or engineers. I don’t think that’s what their future holds for them. But you never know. They could surprise me.

‘Both enjoy acting and films’

Mahikaa is into theatre and she likes it, enjoys films a lot. Myra tries to say no, but I am sure ki woh kahin bhi kuch bhi karke idhar hi aanewali hai. They both take part in school dramas and plays and are good at it.”
