One can’t wait to see Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh slipping into the epochal period roles of Rana Rawal Singh and Alauddin Khilji respectively for Padmavati.

AfterHrs got designers Raghavendra Rathore and Kunal Rawal to decode Khilji and the Rana’s looks in the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film.

Rathore: Tradition in details

“The underlying aura for the costumes would be dreamy yet as close and authentic to the period. However, an eclectic mix of skills sets that exemplifies the ethos of the geographical landscape not only in terms of costumes, but also tradition and heritage would be a detail carried forward in every aspect, similar to the manner in which we worked on in the styling of Eklavya,” says Rathore.

He adds, “Khilji’s costumes would be closer to the Mughal Emperors of the 1300s, in that they would have slightly less of a Hindustani influence as compared to Akbar (as is apparent in Jodhaa Akbar), who almost 300 years later was bound to have borrowed more from his Rajput foes. The play of colour would mainly include hues of light green, shades of blues and greys with accents of armoury. The style of turban would be a forte for the overall look, with important jewellery that would be significant of the era.”

Rathore says that Rana Rawal Singh’s ensembles will include a more colorful palette with subtle combinations of intricate trims and cuts which are reminiscent of the rich heritage of the Mewar rulers. “Accessories including jewellery, turbans and even his prized sword should reflect the Rajput sensibilities of the era. The cut, length, fabric and styling of his achkans would be significantly different from that of Alauddin, especially if the two are in the same frame, highlighting the richness of heritage of both rulers, yet differentiating. Shahid has proven himself to be a very versatile actor and his natural facial expressions and demeanour allow him to reflect the multitude of emotions his character is going through.”

Rawal: Vibrant, rich

Designer Kunal Rawal suggests a vibrant look for Khilji. He says, “Khilji wears a deep emerald and forest green angrakha with matching slim patialas, which is layered with a dull gold embroidered velvet robe with a tonal gold brocade striped border.

The look is styled with a green stole tied on the waist like a kammarbandh/patka/pheta/girdle. Both the angrakha and the stole are adorned with our signature triple stripe detail.

A forest green turban, gold baalis, finger rings, anklets and jewellery complete his look.”

For Rawal Ratan Singh, Kunal suggests a tone-on-tone look.  He says, “Rawal Ratan Singh might wear a tone-on-tone grass motif embroidered angrakha in a rich cream tone paired with a wine churidar and a textured kammarbandh in gold-and-wine, as well as our rose-motif gold and ruby encrusted amulet.

He completes the look with a dual-colour Rajput turban with ruby and emerald stones matching his pearl, emerald and ruby slim long baalis and jewellery.
