At a recently held awards night, both Sonam Kapoor and Jacqueline Fernandez opted for sheer and embellished Yanina couture gowns with embroidery accenting the diaphanous fabric. While Sonam’s outfit had a risque decolletage, Jackie picked an off-shoulder style with billowing sleeves. Evelyn Sharma opted for a sheer Gavin Miguel gown and Sonal Chauhan chose a sheer Shriya Som creation. Towering over everyone else was Waluscha De Sousa sparkling in a sheer and embellished Falguni and Shane Peacock creation. Transparency has also been a mainstay trend internationally with the likes of Alexander McQueen, Christian Dior, Jason Wu, John Galliano, Christopher Kane and Sonia Rykiel reinterpreting it in their own handwriting. Let’s find out what makes the naked dresses such a red carpet staple!

Skin show titillates

Stylist Divyak D’Souza opines that transparency works on the red carpet because one is a bit titillated by skin show. “However, it needs to be the right hint of nude and can’t be the basis of your look. Sometimes an outfit which has a bare back and has a fully austere, opaque front can do the trick. I personally think it’s not groundbreaking. Also, it’s a risk and a fit body is a pre-requisite. Don’t just opt for it for the sake of being sexy. At times it can come across as trying too hard,” he says.

Pushing the envelope

Designer Surily Goel observes that it’s a classic and sexy style. “I loved Sonam’s outfit, it held her well. Sonam did push the envelope and embraced the current theme of romance rather well. There was not an inch of fat popping out. Internationally Stella McCartney has been experimenting with it for a while. I did sheer tops 10 years ago. It gives you a feeling of sexiness. However, it has to work on your body. It’ll always be there. Currently, sheerness is a major part of Gucci vocabulary, too.”

Exudes poise and elegance

Designer Arpita Mehta says, “It’s a flattering trend and looks ethereal. It gives you that poise and elegance and it’s flirty, sexy — you want to stand out and not appear too bold. We’ll be seeing a lot of variations of sheer in coming seasons.”

Designer Anjali Patel Mehta of label Verandah says, “I see transparent layers not only on the red carpet, but also in lighter fabrics for spring pret fashion — on dresses, blouses and also laser cuts making a peekaboo appearance.”

Thanks to Beyoncé

Stylist Isha Bhansali says, “Sheer trend is big on the red carpet for the last so many seasons. As long as we have Beyonce in our lives, transparent sheet dresses or the OTT nude dresses will always be big.”
