Mirzya is not about reincarnation, confirms Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra

Ever since the trailer of Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Mirzya launched, there has been speculation that the film is about reincarnation. Because clearly the love stories are set in two different time periods. Like the Telugu hit Magadheera, which is set in the past as well as the present and is about reincarnation. Mehra, however, refutes that his story has anything to do with reincarnation or the South hit.

Says the director, “The stories of the lovers, played by Harshvardhan Kapoor and Saiyami Kher, run parallel to each other and do not follow one another. One story is the legendary tale of Mirza-Sahiban and the other is set in contemporary Rajasthan, which feels like an echo of the epic. But Adil and Suchitra (Harsh and Saiyami) are not reincarnations, for sure.”

Point out that it feels similar to Magadheera, which is about a reincarnated princess and the fearless warrior she loves and he avers, “It’s not true. While I haven’t seen that film, mine is clearly about the Mirza-Sahiban love story. It’s different from the other legendary love stories — like Romeo-Juliet and Soni-Mahiwal — in that, mine is the only pair who consummated their love physically and is contemporary in that sense. We have gone beyond the physical. It’s about two people understanding each other and giving each other the space to be who they are. ‘I love you and can’t live my life without you, but please carry on with your life’, is the message of our film. The whole definition of real love has changed and become enriched.”
