Celebrities from the US or Europe 'appropriating' Indian culture has always been a touchy topic with the world. First, there was Selena Gomez wearing a bindi in her song, Come and Get It.
Then there was Heidi Klum dressing up as the goddess Kali for Halloween. Now, it's Katy Perry's turn.
The 32-year-old pop star, who is currently living it up in Coachella, was married to her first husband Russell Brand in Rajasthan in 2010. During her trip to India, Perry made it a point to get to know all about the Hindu gods and goddesses. It seems like she was putting that knowledge to use when she posted a picture on Instagram of the Goddess Kali and captioned it 'current mood'.
It still doesn't explain what the Chained to the Rhythm hitmaker was feeling at the time. Maybe the heat of the music festival was finally getting to her. Maybe she couldn't get in line to see her favourite performance (who are we kidding, it's Katy Perry!). But whatever be the reason, Instagram users did not react kindly to the post and flooded the picture with comments.
"watch ya tone.. its a belief and religion u r talking about ..", "Katy Perry You Place Is Hell When Your dead hahaha Have a nice stupid short life in earth haha kali believer", "Katy Perry just post in your limits... You just cant do like this... These religious photos are there for us to worship not to tell your mood..." were some of the comments people made on the post.
However, a large section of people lambasted those criticising the picture by saying that she isn't really offending the Goddess in question or the religion. "Posting pictures of gods isn't exactly an insult." was one of the comments made of the sort. What do you think? Is KP crossing her limit or is it just a case of over-reaction?
