Beyonce's father and former manager of Destiny's Child Matthew Knowles commented about the race and music of his daughter saying she wouldn't be as famous if she had darker skin.

In an interview with Ebony, discussing his book Racism: From the Eyes of a Child, Knowles said that in his days he saw dating white women as a way of getting even or getting back. He claims that deeply ingrained colourism led him to only date white of light-skinned black women.

"I actually thought when I met Tina, my former wife, that she was White. Later I found out that she wasn’t, and she was actually very much in-tune with her Blackness," he revealed.

While talking about raising awareness about colourism in the music industry, he implied that lighter skin of his daughter, Beyonce and Solange, give them advantage.

"When it comes to black females, who are the people who get their music played on pop radio? Mariah Carey, Rihanna, the female rapper Nicki Minaj, my kids (Beyonce and Solange), and what do they all have in common?" he asked.

Beyonce and her father share a rocky relationship since he stopped working as her manager. She commented on the relationship via her visual album Lemonade and has often referenced him in her work.
