Mahmood Farooqui of Peepli Live fame, was called in for investigation by the Delhi Police on Saturday after a US based research scholar of Indian origin, along with a senior US embassy official, filed an FIR against him for allegedly sexually assaulting her. Farooqui was then produced in court and put under judicial custody for 14 days. Mahmood’s wife Anusha Rizvi, however, has rubbished the rape allegations terming the complaint as untrue.

In her statement, the Peepli Live co-director said, ““A complaint has been registered against Mahmood Farooqui. The moment he heard about it, he presented himself at the concerned police station. He was thereafter taken into custody. The complaint is manipulated and false. We don’t want to make any further comments on the matter because the case is under investigation. We will wait for the court’s decision where the actual truth of the matter will come out. In the meanwhile we are thankful for the show of support from friends, colleagues and well-wishers. We are determined to fight this till the reality is presented before the people. We are very sure of it.”

Reportedly, the complainant had met Farooqui through a common friend in 2014 while she was here for a research project in which Farooqui helped her.

In her FIR, the 30-year old complainant stated that on March 26, 2015 she was invited to a party at Farooqui’s rented apartment in Sukhdev Vihaar, Delhi, along with two other guests. Post the party, Mahmood requested the woman to stay back until his wife returned and then sexually assaulted her. The woman left the country within 10 days from the incident but returned 3 months later to file the complain after approaching the US embassy.

During these three months- from the time she left till her return- the complainant also sent a few emails accusing Mahmood to which he reportedly replied accepting his mistake and seeking forgiveness.
