In Pictures | Oscars 2017: Bland affair on red carpet leading up to politically charged show

Oscars 2017 will be remembered for a lot of things. The royal flub while announcing the Best Picture winner for the 89th Academy Awards will definitely overshadow most of it. Candies raining, unsuspecting tourists allowed into Dolby theatre in the middle of the ceremony, Kimmel v/s Damon, and the politically charged comments and speeches were a few moments to hold onto.

But if we consider fashion on the red carpet, what with Lagerfeld-Streep controversy, everybody played it safe. Whites, greys and golds ruled. But nothing that made a lasting impression.

Let's take a look at the dresses which still managed to stand out in the crowd.

1. Fifty Shades of Grey

Director Ava DuVarney whose documentary 13th was nominated, chose a grey gown from Ashi. Priyanka Chopra, who did not present like she did last year and was there to support her Baywatch co-star Dwayne Johnson, went for a Ralph and Russo number. Isabelle Huppert continued with her style of mixing French nonchalance with Hollywood glamour in an Armani Prive dress.

2. Golden affair!

Best Actress winner Emma Stone went back in time with the Givenchy flapper dress. Nominee Justin Timberlake didn't need to worry about the win because he already has his golden trophy in wife Jessica Biel. She dazzled in a Kaufman Franco number. Chrissy Teigen played it safe with her tried and tested style of thigh-high slit in a Zuhair Murad caped dress.

3. Dev Patel: Mama's boy

Kimmel might have tried his best to bring down Damon's enthusiasm but the wins for Manchester by the Sea (Best Actor, Original Screenplay) must have made up for it all. Dev Patel, the first-time nominee in the Best Supporting Actor category, took his mum as his plus one. Dwayne Johnson opted for royal blue, velvet jacket for his suit. With wife in tow, he looked ready to roll.

Captain Fantastic Viggo Mortensen looked nonchalant in a blue three-piece suit. Wish his reel family was there to recreate the Golden Globes moment with him. Riz Ahmed chose a sharp, cobalt blue tux by Zegna. Gale Garcia Bernal looked dapper in Dior Homme while Best Supporting Actor winner Mahershala Ali looked impressive in all black.

These three ladies made all the heads turn!

Brie Larson's Oscar de la Renta was the definition of chic while Janelle Monae's Elie Saab number was simply fabulous. But it's Taraji P Henson who gets all the points for setting that red carpet on fire in her Alberta Ferretti dress.

6. BONUS - Amy Adams, woohoo!

Amy Adams skipped the red carpet after the Academy snubbed her movies Arrival and Nocturnal Animals in the nominations. But that didn't stop the world from taking notice of her sexy, silver Tom Ford gown when she came on stage to present the trophy for Best Adapted Screenplay. (Phil McCarten / ©A.M.P.A.S.)
