Sonam knows her beauty bang on: Namrata Soni

She's a B-town favourite having worked with the likes of Sonam Kapoor, Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and Sonakshi Sinha among others. From editorials to red carpets, film sets and even weddings, Namrata Soni has built an impressive portfolio over several years creating hair and make-up magic. After Hrs caught up with the make-up artist at an Innisfree brand event.

What according to you are make-up kit essentials?

Firstly, a good primer for the skin, whether it is a serum or a cream depending on your skin type, a good mascara, a kajal pencil and a lip and cheek tint.

Since it’s bridal season, where do you feel Indian brides go wrong?

I think they try to follow trends, instead of doing what suits them. Just because purple eyeshadow is a trend or indigo blue is a trend it doesn’t mean you have to do it. Just because you’re wearing a pink lehenga doesn’t mean you have to a pink eyeshadow or a pink liner. You have to trust your make-up artist or yourself, to do something that will be classic and everlasting. Because honestly you’re going to see these pictures after 20 years and will be like what the hell was I thinking using purple eyeshadow or a mint green liner. Follow and do what suits you and what brings your best features out.

Your favourite Innisfree product?

The longwear My style My Cushion. I have been wearing it everyday and I’ve been going through lots of skin problems, in the last year. I’ve been using it since the last two months and it’s helped my skin calm down. I’m not a foundation person normally, but since my skin has been breaking out I started wearing it. Mostly people can’t even see that I’m wearing anything and for me as a make-up artist that is the most important thing. I don’t want people to see me as cakey as then they will think that’s the kind of work I’ll do on them.

How is it working with Sonam Kapoor? Does she follow beauty trends?

She knows her beauty bang on. She knows what she loves and she loves experimenting. She loves trying new things. Open to anything and everything that comes out in the beauty market which I think is commendable. As an actor you tend to get very comfortable doing the same trend because you know it works. She’s someone who’s willing to try new things whether it’s a fail or a pass doesn’t matter. I love her eyes. I think I’ve created some of my best looks in my career on her. She has these beautiful almond shaped eyes. It’s like a canvas, I can paint and draw on it.

Are you planning to launch your own make-up line in the future?

Yes, I really want to. I’m trying for something organic or natural because I believe in that. There are a lot of cosmetic brands that don’t believe in going organic but I think it’s time – the way we start looking after ourselves, should do the same for the environment a little bit.

Who is your favourite make-up artist?

I actually loved Kevin Aucoin. I was very sad when he passed away. He will always remain my favourite because his creativity, his foresight was something no make-up artist today can match.
