A graduate of St Joseph's University in Philadelphia has given USD 50 million to the Roman Catholic university, the largest gift in the school's history.

The university plans to bolster its endowment and increase scholarships with the gift announced Today from 83- year-old James Maguire and his wife, Frances Maguire.

St Joseph's said the gift will also be used to fund leadership training for teachers and support the university's risk and insurance management program, which James Maguire helped begin.

Maguire is a 1958 graduate who founded an insurance company that had offices nationwide.

The Maguires gave the school USD 15 million in 2005 to support a campus expansion.

The university has about 8,400 undergraduate and graduate students.
