A study by DU students at Tihar prison complex has stressed on employability and rehabilitation of inmates as the prime objective of the reformative process by prison authorities.

A team of 35 post-graduate students and their teachers at social work department of Delhi University (DU) today concluded their four-day camp at the prison complex.

The objective of the camp was to find out new avenues of reformation, rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates within society.

"The students felt employability and rehabilitation of the inmates has to be the prime objective of the reformative process initiated by the jail administration," said a statement by Director General (Prisons) office.

The students made presentations before the DG (Prisons) Sudhir Yadav and other authorities, pointing out that effective managerial practises can bring desired results of reformation and reintegration.

"The objective was to let the inmates interact with the young students freely about their feelings," Yadav said.

The students viewed that matters relating to undertrials and the release of convicts should be closely observed by legal authorities in order to prevent procedural delays.

Upneet Lali, Director, Institute of Correctional Administration, Chandigarh, said that 99 per cent of inmates get released at some time or the other necessitating mandatory reformation and reintegration.

Former DG (Prisons) Vimla Mehra emphasised on institutionalisation of reformation initiatives at the jails.

The entire programme was coordinated by Neena Pandey, Associate Professor, Department of Social Work, Delhi University.
