Several youth Congress members protested outside party Vice-President Rahul Gandhi's office and the state party office on Tuesday, demanding fair distribution of tickets for the municipal elections. They also demanded more representation of youths in the polls.

The party workers said it was time to announce the names of the candidates, as they needed to start campaigning. "I wonder why the senior leaders have not yet released the names of the candidates yet. They have been working on it for the last several months. Why wait for the last moment?" rued Ritesh Tomar of Munirka village in south Delhi.

Unfazed by the protest, however, senior leaders said they will proceed the way they have decided as far as the distribution of tickets is concerned. "We have received nearly 12,000 applications. The candidates will be selected after proper scrutiny," Congress leader Chattar Singh said.

Meanwhile, the party is welcoming the BJP and the AAP defectors. On Tuesday, BJP's sitting councillor from Govindpuri, Chander Prakash, joined Congress in the presence of former south Delhi MP Ramesh Kumar, Kalkaji MLA Subhash Chopra, and senior party functionary Chattar Singh.

Prakash had won the elections on a Janata Dal (United) ticket in 2012 and had then joined the BJP. Party insiders said Prakash's move may have been prompted by the fact that the BJP had decided to not give tickets to any sitting councillor. The Govindpuri ward is a part of the Kalkaji seat.

Prakash, however, said that he was joining Congress because he believed in the party's policies and was impressed with Chopra, who secured approval for a rehabilitation project for slum dwellers in Kalkaji. Sources said Prakash may be nominated as Congress' candidate from the Govindpuri ward.
