As the wedding season in the Capital commences, all those involved in the preparations beware! If you see any women dressed up for the occasion and participating in the function wholeheartedly but cannot remember who they are, then your uninvited guests might be about to rob you blind.

With a simple modus operandi of targeting high-end weddings in the Capital, where the hustle and bustle can easily divert attention from them, the women from a village in Madhya Pradesh (MP) behave like guests and then flee with valuables, including shagun envelopes and jewellery, right under the families' noses.

In a series of such arrests, the Delhi Police on Monday nabbed three women, identified as Rano, 35, Varsha, 25, and Manisha, 22, while they were at 'work' at a wedding in the Royal Banquet Hall of Ashok Vihar on Monday. An auto driver, identified as Satish Yadav, was also arrested. The women called themselves the Rano gang.

During interrogation, the women revealed that the womenfolk in their village, Gul Khedi in Khilchipur Tehsil of Rajgarh, MP, were trained in the 'profession'. The gang has already committed thefts at over 100 weddings.

"The trio would spend quality time at a wedding, mingle with relatives, eat food, and then gradually take position next to the mandap. They would then identify their target and steal valuables at an opportune time," Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch, Ravindra Yadav said.

He credited a team led by ACP Sanjay Sehrawat, under the overall supervision of DCP Madhur Verma, for carefully analysing the modus operandi and nabbing the gang members.

On February 2, during a wedding at Hotel Lalit, they were captured by one of the CCTV cameras. The police then zeroed in on the auto that the trio came in.

It turned out that the auto belonged to Satish, who used to take Rs 2,000 per night from these women. The police then started following Satish. He was seen loitering around a banquet hall in Ashok Vihar on Sunday.

"After spotting the auto, a trap was laid and the four were arrested while they were trying to flee. The accused revealed that they used to target at least two weddings per day. They worked only during the wedding seasons and returned to their village afterwards," a senior police officer said.
