A woman has alleged that she was assaulted by a man in her neighbourhood in south Delhi's Malviya Nagar when she tried to save a dog which he was thrashing publicly. The woman claimed to have been slapped and touched inappropriately by the man, who she said was outraged because of her intervention. The accused has been arrested, senior officials said.
According to the woman's complaint, based on which an FIR was registered at Malviya Nagar police station, the incident took place around 7:30 in the evening on Thursday when she had left her house to visit a nearby market. The woman said as she stepped out, she noticed a man was beating a dog mercilessly.
"I asked him not to beat the helpless creature upon which he got irritated and started abusing me... I asked him not to abuse me, on which he entered my compound and slapped me and pushed me by grabbing my hair. He also tried to grope me below my shoulder area," the complainant said in her FIR.
She added that it was only after a couple in the locality and her own brother heard the noise that they rushed in to save her, and the man was controlled. She also told the police that she is really worried about her and her family's safety as the man threatened her of dire consequences. She also said that the man threatened her and said that he would harm her and other dogs in the area.
A senior police officer said that since the woman approached them, a case has been registered under IPC 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354B (Assault or use of criminal force with intent to disrobe), 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) and 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) against the man.
While the accused has been arrested, CCTV footages from the area are also being checked to establish the claims of the woman, said the police.
THE INCIDENT
