At 102, Khazani Devi has become the oldest patient at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences to have recovered, almost miraculously, from a hip fracture. Not only that, the strong-willed woman has even started moving slowly in the corridors of the country's premier medical institute.
After slipping on a bathing mat at her home recently, the Gurugram resident was immediately rushed to AIIMS. With no such medical history, this was the first time that she had suffered an injury.
"She is the oldest patient we have treated, so far. Before this, we had treated a 100-year- old person. As soon as she came to the hospital, we started her operation. Now, she is walking safely in our ward," Dr Rajesh Malhotra, Professor of Orthopaedics and Chief of the Trauma Centre, AIIMS, said.
Hip fractures and damage to spine and forearms are some of the most common injuries associated with falls. Among the elderly, who have weaker structural muscles, poor balance, reflexes, vision, and attenuated bones, a slip can often lead to much more dangerous injuries. In fact, according to doctors, a 'hip-attack' can kill and it is extremely important to get it operated upon immediately.
"Many patients with such fractures come to hospitals very late. Most of them do not even recognise the injury. Every day they pass on the bed, their chances of getting better drop. Even in the US, three-four patients out of 10 die of hip fractures," Dr Malhotra said.
"In addition to the fractures, we have to deal with Osteoporosis, a disease that weakens bones. One Osteoporosis-related fracture leads to another," he added.
Ruing the government apathy in this regard, Dr Ajay Gupta, head of Orthopaedics at the Lok Nayak hospital, said: "Hip fractures are the most neglected in Delhi. It is one of the most common fracture and yet there are no facilities for it. Many times, patients coming to us have been turned away by almost all big hospitals in the Capital due to shortage of C-arm machines. The government must pay attention to such patients."
