A Sharda University student was killed and another was critically injured in a road accident near Sector 150 on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway on Sunday night.

According to the police, the accident took place around midnight. The deceased was identified as Shubham Nag, 23, a native of Himachal Pradesh, and the injured as Aaryan Dhillon, 25, a native of Chandigarh. Nag was driving the Honda Jazz. They were on their way to the university campus when the incident took place. Dhillon suffered severe injuries to his rib cage and is being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Sharda hospital.

Both had completed their four-year MBBS course and were working as interns.

"They might have been speeding on the expressway. A patch on the road is worn out, due to which their vehicle flipped several times," said Manish Kumar Sharma, Station House Officer, Knowledge Park police station.

According to a police officer, both Nag and Dhillon were wearing seat belts and the airbags had been deployed automatically following the crash. The vehicle was badly damaged on the driver's side.

A police officer said: "A patch on the expressway near Sector 150 is worn out and gravel is lying along the road, making the curve deadly. Any vehicle, even at an average speed, would skid under such conditions." Besides, no signage has been put up by the authorities to warn the motorists.

Authorities, however, refuted the claim that the accident took place because of the bad condition of the road. "I do not think the design of the curve or the rubble caused the accident near the Shafipur village on Noida-Greater Noida Expressway. Such accidents take place due to speeding on the expressway. I have ensured that all small dug-up patches are repaired to ensure a smooth ride for commuters," Senior Project Engineer of the Noida authority, Mohamad Ishrat, said.

Last week on Thursday, another Sharda University student, Paras Ahluwalia, had died in a similar incident near Sector 144 on the same stretch of the expressway.
