The Central Information Commission (CIC) has asked the Delhi Police what efforts the force made to arrest the three absconding accused in the Mahatma Gandhi assassination case. The Commission raised the question after Odisha-based Hemant Panda filed an RTI plea.

Panda filed the RTI plea after he could not get evidence that the police made any effort to nab the absconding accused - Gangadhar Dahawate, Surya Dev Sharma, and Gangadhar Yadav.

Panda, who is a researcher and interested in studying records pertaining to assassination of Gandhi, approached the CIC after he could not find any response related to documents pertaining to the case.

Panda told the Commission that he had gone through all records, including those in the repository of the National Archives of India, but could not find two important documents - final chargesheet filed by the Delhi Police and the order of execution of Nathuram Godse.

He wanted to know three things: What efforts were made to arrest the three accused in the case, what were the reasons for acquitting the other two accused, and whether a copy of the final chargesheet and order of Godse's execution were missing from the record?

Information Commissioner Sridhar Acharyulu noted that the records pertaining to the chargesheet showed that the three accused were absconding. "But the National Archives of India cannot give any opinion or information about why they were not arrested," he said.

The officials representing the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the National Archives of India claimed that they can only receive and protect the records but cannot give any opinion on the same.

"They were unable to say anything whether any important document, such as the final chargesheet was missing, or what happened to records showing efforts of the police to arrest the three accused," Acharyulu said.
