Delhiites must not forget the adage ‘all that glitters is not gold’, for gangs involved in snatching in the national capital have found a unique way to loot people, wherein they set ‘gold traps’ by throwing a gold-plated ring on the road and then target anyone who picks it up.

The moment a vulnerable target picks up the ring, two to three men pounce on him, claiming the ring belongs to them and threatening to call the police. One of the accused would then pretend that his phone is not working and ask the victim to give his phone so that a call to the police could be made. Next, before the person realises what has happened, they would flee with his mobile phone, and any other valuables that they could grab.

The Delhi Police arrested two members of one such gang on Friday. Calling themselves the ‘challa gang’, the snatchers were involved in six such cases of theft and robbery, the police said. “The two arrested have been identified as Mohammad Sajid alias Guddu (31) and Mohhamad Feroz (38). Six cases of theft and burglary in the Mehrauli area of south Delhi have been solved,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Ishwar
Singh.

Recently, there have been incidents of mobile phone thefts and burglaries reported in the area. To crack such cases, a special team was formed to identify the culprits involved.

During investigations and after speaking to the victims in various cases, the police officers analysed the modus operandi. The team also kept a close eye on criminals who were in jail or out on bail. Acting on a tip-off, they set a trap and the duo was arrested from the Lado Sarai area of south Delhi.

“Six mobile phones have been recovered from them. Sajid is a school dropout and started snatching and committing robberies to earn money. He was previously involved in five other cases of theft and robberies in the southwest Delhi area,” Singh said. Feroz joined him later, in a bid to earn his daily expenses. Both of them are residents of Outer Delhi’s Bawana area.
