Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), on Tuesday, launched the cashless token sale and smart card recharge facility. Passengers will now be able to use their credit or debit cards to buy a token or recharge their smart cards to enter the metro stations.

The credit and debit cards can be used at the token vending machines installed at various metro stations across the Delhi-NCR region. However, the services, which were kicked off from the Lal Qila (Red Fort) metro station, will slowly be extended to other stations in the coming weeks.

DMRC's Managing Director Mangu Singh inaugurated the machine at the Lal Qila Metro station of Line-6 (Violet Line). Various other senior officials of DMRC were also present at the inauguration ceremony.

"The new cashless facility is expected to provide commuters a faster and more convenient access to the Delhi Metro network besides helping in managing the problem of change/coins at the stations," said Singh.

Commuters can buy a token by using PIN authentication through their debit/credit cards on the TVMs. With the introduction of this system, Delhi Metro also becomes the first-ever metro system in the country to introduce such a facility for facilitating lakhs of commuters on a daily basis.

"The facility will currently be available at all the six TVMs and two RCTMs (Recharge Card Terminals) at the Lal Qila metro station only," a senior Metro official said. "It will be gradually rolled out at 36 TVMs/RCTMs of the ITO-Kashmere Gate Section of Line-6, known as the Heritage Corridor," he added.

By the end of this year, approximately 400 TVMs/RCTMs, installed at all the stations of the entire DMRC network; will be enabled with this facility. By next year, another 500 such points with this facility will be added at different stations including the upcoming Phase-3, of the Delhi Metro Network

"Hopefully, we will save a lot of time now. Earlier, we had to stand in a long queue to get our cards recharged by using debit cards from customer care. Now, we can get it done from the machine itself," said Raghav Batra, a regular commuter.
