"It is like a double celebration for us this year. We were extremely happy when doctors informed us that we are having twins. But when we got to know about the complexity of the delivery, we were really worried," said Singh, a resident of Hari Nagar in west Delhi. Singh and her husband were told about the multiple risks involved with monoamniotic twins. They were also told that this kind of pregnancy is rare and the expectant mothers in these cases are generally advised for termination by most medical facilities.
Monoamniotic twins is a rare occurring in approximately 1 in 35,000 to 1 in 60,000 pregnancies where serious complications could arise. One such complexity is when the embryo does not split until after the formation of amniotic sac which leads to the formation of monoamniotic twins, wherein the two babies share the same placenta. "I knew right then that it was going to be a long road ahead of me," added 28-year-old Nidhi.
As determined she was to have both her babies healthy, she then began her search online and read every article about 'delivery of monoamniotic twins'. After doing a lot of research, she decided to visit a private hospital in Delhi.
"Having a set of monoamniotic twins can be precarious and unpredictable. To avoid complications, most twins are delivered prematurely, often by C-section," said Dr Poonam Khera, Senior Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, BLK Super Speciality Hospital, who monitored the pregnancy of Nidhi.
The mother was advised complete bed rest for 80-90 days to reduce the risk during her pregnancy. "She underwent emergency caesarean at 33 weeks due to chances of intra uterine growth retardation or poor growth of foetus inside the womb. She successfully delivered two male babies, weighing 1.2kg and 1.59 kg each," Dr Khera said.
The twins have completed one year and they are in good health. "They are turning one this year and it is the happiest day of our life. We are having a grand celebration for them," Singh said.
Explaining the health concerns in such cases, Dr Khera explained, "There are chances of cord entanglement between the twins, which can lead to choking, cord compression which could stop the flow of nutrition amongst one twin and Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS).
