The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) began the trial runs on the over 10-km long elevated stretch of its Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar corridor of the Metro on Wednesday. The 59-km long Pink Line will "rigorously test" the new signalling technology, Communication Based Train Control (CBTC). The train ran between IP Extension and Maujpur elevated section, which is part of the Phase-III project and is expected to open in parts, by June 2018.

This section from IP Extension-Maujpur consists of nine elevated stations, including IP Extension, Anand Vihar, Karkardooma, Karkardooma Court, Krishna Nagar, East Azad Nagar, Welcome, Jaffrabad and Maujpur Station.

According to a senior DMRC official, the train's interface will be checked for physical infringement with civil infrastructure while moving on the track as the test of various subsystems of coaches will be done. "The response of the train at different speeds, braking of the train and the interconnection with the Operations Control Centre (OCC) will also be monitored during the trials. The behavior of the track system and the Over Head Electrification (OHE) too will be inspected repeatedly," the official said.

The corridor will have three interchange stations at Anand Vihar, Karkardooma and Welcome. "The facility of interchange of Metro trains between line 7 and line 3/4 is available at Anand Vihar and at Karkardooma, and between line 7 and line 1 at the Welcome station. The Maujpur station is a four-track station having a provision of connection from Maujpur to Mukundpur, a corridor proposed in Phase-IV of Delhi Metro project," the official informed.

Meanwhile, the DMRC faced a lot of challenges while constructing this corridor of Phase-III, which included managing heavy traffic at various points at Patparganj, Anand Vihar, Welcome, Jaffrabad and Maujpur. "The construction in the running drain, land acquisition at Patparganj, Anand Vihar, Welcome, Jaffrabad and Maujpur also posed hindrance during construction. Major utility diversions like shifting of water pipelines at Jaffrabad were avoided by re-aligning of station foundations. Electrical installations were shifted for the construction of Anand Vihar ISBT station," he said.

The trial runs between the Majlis Park and Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus Metro stations of the Pink Line had begun in September last year.
