Tihar, South Asia's largest prison, is set to enter the perfume market with the launch of its line of products called 'Wah-O'. A 'School of Perfumes and Fragrances' was inaugurated by Director General Ajay Kashyap and activist Nafisa Ali, who is also the brand ambassador, in the premises of the Tihar jail on Saturday.

The profits earned by the sale of Wah-O will be distributed among the Tihar jail inmates. A 10 per cent share of the profit will go to the Prisoner's Welfare Fund while 25 per cent of the annual profits will go to the Victims Welfare Fund -- thus helping inmates to become economically independent and "productive members" of the society.

"Nafisa has agreed to be the brand ambassador of Tihar perfumes which will enter the market under the brand name of Wah-O," an official said. The official added that limited investment is required to set-up these units and that the inmates can work as entrepreneurs.

At present, five fragrances (sandal, rose, mogra, jasmine, lavender), and a blend released under the name of Nafis, is being produced by the inmates. In its second phase, a products such as incense cones, potpourri and diffusers will be added too.

Currently, Tihar products are supplied to government offices. One of the stalls is currently at the Delhi Secretariat, which offers a number of Tihar Jail products. Initially, Tihar Jail's products were sold to prisoners and visitors, who can buy the merchandise from a store just outside the jail. Later, they began to appear in stalls near courts.
