Residents of Delhi had a tough time on Friday due to a shortage of water supply in a few areas. Places like Mukherjee Nagar, Kingsway Camp, Jahangirpuri, Adarsh Nagar, etc, were affected due to the acute drop in water levels in the Yamuna.

According to officials, the drop in Yamuna's water level has led to curtailed production of water in the 40-MGD plant at Wazirabad. There has been a 30 per cent drop in water productions, while the city is already reeling under ever-rising temperatures. The relief, however, is that water supply will be back to normal from Saturday evening.

"There was an acute shortage of water throughout the day. The summers have begun and it is extremely difficult to survive the day without water. We wouldn't hjave been so much in trouble, had we been informed earlier. We have already made arrangements for Saturday," said Sarita Singh, a resident of Mukherjee Nagar.

As per the Delhi Jal Board's summer action plan document, an annual pre-summer ritual, the water utility board would work towards increasing production from its treatment plants, tubewells, and ranney wells, as well as increasing the use of recycled waste-water.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Jal Board this year, is aiming to produce 914 million gallons of treated water per day, increasing its target from last year's 900 MGD.

Wazirabad and Chandrawal plants account for about 220 MGD water of DJB's 900 MGD.
