Delhi government's proposal to provide an 85 percent quota to state-based students in Delhi University (DU) did not go down well with the students and faculty members. Most of them think that it will "destroy" the diverse and rich culture of their campuses.

"I myself am from Delhi but I don't think that domicile-based reservation should be given. Our university is famous for its diverse culture. Eighty five percent reservation for Delhi students will destroy this diversity," said Sankalp Kumar, a third-year BA (prog) student at Kirori Mal College.

The Delhi government has recently proposed reserving 85 percent seats for Delhi-students in state funded colleges. In Delhi University, 28 colleges receive financial assistance from the state government.

Delhi government had written to the Vice Chancellor in this regard, urging him to announce reservation for the Delhiites. "If people of Delhi are funding these colleges, don't they have the right to benefit from them?" asked the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to the VC.

According to University officials, being a Central University domicile-based reservation is not possible in DU. "DU is a central University which obliges it to give equal treatment to students coming from any part of the country.

Under the Delhi University Act, even if a college is funded by the state government, we cannot provide domicile-based reservation," a senior Varsity official said.

However, among those who are eying a seat in DU in the ongoing admission process, Shweta Sharma, a student at Ryan International Vasant Kunj finds nothing wrong in domicile based reservation. "I don't see anything wrong if the state government is trying to provide an opportunity to Delhiites. Being a citizen of Delhi, I have the first right to study in colleges here," she said.
