A student at Delhi University's (DU) Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) allegedly manhandled a faculty member in the college premises on Friday, over a dispute regarding internal marks.

The student of Global Business Operation (GBO) course at SRCC was allegedly caught in a scuffle with an Assistant Professor, after he did not score good marks in internal assessment. "The student slapped the teacher at least three times and then kicked him, while the latter was about to leave for home around 5.30 pm," a senior SRCC faculty member said.

"The student never attended classes. He has failed all papers. He was harassing the Assistant Professor and forcing him to give him better marks. When the teacher refused, the student manhandled him," he added.

Following the incident, the college authorities filed a complaint at the Maurice Nagar police station. "We have registered an FIR under Sections 341 (wrongful restraint) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC)," Jatin Narwal, DCP (North), said. The student was later released on bail.

The Assistant Professor could not be reached for comments. "He is in a state of shock and has left for his native place in Haryana," another faculty member at the college said.

It is not the first time that a faculty member has been manhandled by a student in SRCC. Last year, former DU Student Union leader had attacked sports teacher Vineet Mehta over some issue regarding use of sports facilities on the campus.

"This is unacceptable. The college authorities should immediately suspend the student in question. We can't allow our fellow faculty members to be insulted by their own students like this," a senior faculty member said. Despite several attempts, SRCC Principal RP Rustagi did not respond to the queries.

A senior SRCC official, however, said: "The college authorities will convene a meeting on Monday and is expected to take action in the matter."
