The Uttar Pradesh (UP) Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) raided a coaching centre in west Delhi’s Uttam Nagar area on Wednesday, which was reportedly being used to spy on Indian military operations by a suspected Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agent, Gulshan Kumar.

The ATS had arrested 11 people from the National Capital Region (NCR) and various locations in UP, including Lucknow, on January 24, in connection with the case. Kumar was arrested from south Delhi’s Mehrauli area with the help of the Delhi Police’s Special Cell.

The raid was conducted after receiving a tip-off from the military intelligence wing in Jammu and Kashmir last month. The wing members had claimed that they had received suspicious calls regarding secret military information.

Interrogation revealed that Kumar had been working as the head of the IT department of a renowned coaching centre in west Delhi and had been operating an illegal telephone exchange from there.

“Based on the information, the coaching centre was raided and equipment and software, which were used to convert internet calls into voice calls, were recovered from Kumar’s system. A number of SIM boxes, used to convert calls and connect to receivers, were also recovered. Calls were made in such a manner that receivers could see only Indian numbers on their phones,” said an officer.

He added that the exchange was not only making an enormous amount of money by routing international calls but was also being used by Kumar and others to call officers of the Indian Army and retrieve critical information from them.

“Kumar, a software professional, and others were allegedly spying on India’s military operations. They were enabling ISI spies, who would pose as senior Army officers, to call military personnel posted in Jammu and Kashmir and get crucial information related to the Indian defence strategies,” the officer said.

Sources further revealed that Kumar had earlier worked with the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) in Afghanistan along with the US Army. He told the police that he had participated as an IT expert, but his claims are yet to be ascertained. Further probe to ascertain his links with the ISI or other intelligence agencies is underway, the officer said.

The ATS also recovered 10 mobile phones, six SIM box units, over 100 prepaid SIM cards, 30 data cards, and five laptops from Kumar’s possession.

Meanwhile, it has also come to light that the intelligence agencies had alerted the Punjab Police about possible terror strikes a week ahead of the twin blasts that claimed the lives of five people. The high-intensity twin explosions took place during a political road show at Maur in Punjab’s Bathinda district on Tuesday night.
