While the BJP-ruled civic bodies are struggling to manage the city's waste, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) may have to look at alternative options for dumping tonnes of garbage, as the sanitary landfill site proposed at Maidan Garhi may not be used for the purpose. The official decision is to come soon.

The local RWA had been fighting a battle against the civic body's move to create a landfill site here, and the recent move left RWA officials jubilant. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA), the land owning agency, will be allocating land to the civic body but not for this purpose.

"There are a number of issues involved on this site. Though the options are few with the land space in South Delhi, we are exploring other options. The DDA will be allocating land to the Corporation, but it may be used for another project than the landfill," said a senior Corporation official.

According to officials, besides health and environmental concerns, it is difficult for the site to get approval for a landfill site by various agencies, including the Airport Authority of India (AAI), as landfills attract birds such as eagles and vultures. This can be a threat to the operations at the IGI airport, located barely a few kilometres away.

The SDMC is now looking at other options such as expanding the Okhla landfill site or going further away to the fringes of South Delhi.

Areas under the jurisdiction of civic body generated over 3,000 metric tonnes of waste on a daily basis. The proposed landfill site lies meters away from the main road and between two international universities including IGNOU and residential areas such as the Freedom Fighters Enclave, among others.

The civic body had asked the DDA for around 9.5 acres of land to build a landfill site five years ago.

"We have held a number of meetings with the DDA officials as well as staged protests over the last five years since the move was proposed, as it would affect both the health of the residents, students as well as the ecology of the area," said Prem Deep, RWA member, Freedom Fighters Enclave.
