Inspired by bike stunts in Bollywood movies, a gang of youths started practicing the techniques and soon gained expertise as well. But then, their decision to use these techniques to commit crimes in order to gain fame landed them in jail. The three were involved in the notorious snatching case wherein a woman fell out of an auto and slipped into a coma.

The three, one of them a juvenile, also stole the hard disk of a scientist based in Kazakhstan. They, however, failed to cause any damage to the disk as they thought it was a battery bank.

The accused were identified as Mohammad Habib Khan, a BCom final year student, and Rahul. Both have snatching cases registered against them.

In the beginning, the accused started off by snatching ice-cream cones from passersby. Their claim to fame became their biggest downfall when they started recording their stunts and uploading videos on popular websites and social media. According to the police, the photos and videos were tagged with the location of the crime, and several of their friends liked and commented on the videos.

“After cases of snatching and robbery were reported, police got the first clues from the CCTV footage. Rahul was arrested on the basis of the footage. He confessed to his involvement in over 300 cases of snatching and robbery. In one of the crimes, a woman was dragged out of a three-wheeler as she protested to snatching. She got injured in the incident and slipped into a coma for more than a week. They also snatched the bag of a geologist with ONGC, based in Kazakhstan. Robbed items were handed over to two receivers to sell the valuables for money,” DCP (Shahdara) Nupur Prasad said.

Interrogation revealed that the juvenile member of the team was the one to decide the spots of crimes. “The juvenile is a school dropout, who was getting inspired from YouTube channels. The money was spent on a lavish lifestyle, including better bikes. There sole motive was to get maximum likes and become famous,” the DCP said.
