The party promises to abolish house tax and will also waive off all pending arrears
Lashing out on the Opposition parties, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Sunday said it will end the 'inspector raj', once the party comes into power in the municipal polls scheduled for April 23.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday announced that as soon as the party will win the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections. The party promises to abolish house tax and will also waive off all pending arrears. The promise was later criticised by Opposition parties — BJP and Congress.
"The common man is happy with the new promise that has been made by the party. Other parties should not worry about it. We have been fulfilling all the promises that we have ever made. The people of Delhi are happy with us," said Sisodia while addressing a press conference on Sunday.
Terming the BJP as "Bhartiya Jumla Party", Sisodia said it has turned into a party which turns away from its promises and alleged that the saffron party which ruled the MCDs for 10 years is worried because a racket of property tax and "inspector raj" will be finished.
"They are worried because abolishing of house taxes will mean finishing of middlemen and corruption in the civic bodies. The house tax has given rise to inspector raj system in corporations which will be finished if AAP comes to power," he said.
The Deputy Chief Minister said that his party had studied and analysed the impact before the announcement was made by Chief Minister on Saturday, and that the party would ensure that electricity tariffs are not hiked. Also water and medicines are provided free of cost at government hospitals.
"When we had promised free water, BJP and Congress had said that this will turn Jal Board bankrupt; however, the Jal Board made additional revenue of Rs 178 crore after the scheme. The reason BJP, Congress politicians are so unhappy with our announcement is that they are directly or indirectly connected to a web of agents who extort money in the name of getting house tax bills settled and assessed," Sisodia said.
Kejriwal on Saturday called the current house tax structure as "draconian", and alleged that it has become a source of widespread corruption for municipal councillors and officers in all three civic bodies where BJP is in power for the last 10 years. There are an estimated nine lakh property tax payers in the city and about Rs 600 crore in revenue is earned annually by the three civic bodies, according to official sources.
