In a bid to maintain sanitation in its area, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Saturday acquired six new mechanical street sweepers and other modern machines. The machines were showcased at an event where Lieutenant Governor (L-G) Anil Baijal was present.

Baijal asked the SDMC to procure all the remaining machines, which have been ordered by it, at the earliest.

SDMC Commissioner PK Goel said the sweepers will help in keeping our roads clean. "The sweepers have rotating brushes that are used to keep roads, pavements and other hard surfaces clean and free from debris. It has a 31,000-mm sweeping width that ensures effective and quick cleaning of roads which can save thousands of man hours and reduce pollution," Goel said.

"This move will go a long way in improving the ranking of the civic body in the next Swachhata Sarvekshan," he added.

Meanwhile, the L-G asked the SDMC to strive hard to match the level of cleanliness achieved by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC). "More efforts are required for cleaning and sanitation," he said.

The L-G later took a round of the recently beautified Defence Colony Market. "During the inspection, he was also given a presentation on the proposed fully automated multi-level (G+5) car parking at Defence Colony Market," the SDMC said in a statement.

Baijal concluded his visit with an inauguration of beautification work of the area underneath the Lajpat Nagar flyover to make it clean, green, and an attractive place in South Delhi.

"It will be constructed over an area of 914 square meters at an estimated cost of Rs 13 lakh within 12 months," a senior official at the civic body said. Baijal visited the site of the beautification work, currently underway, beneath the Lajpat Nagar flyover on Ring Road," the official added.

South Corporation's Mayor Kamaljeet Sehrawat stated that the SDMC have been taking a number of initiatives to boost sanitation activities.

Analysis

Cleanliness has been an issue for Delhi’s civic corporations, especially the east and south corporations, faring particularly badly.
Lack of accountability and a clear mandate are the chief reasons why these areas remain unclean.
