The face-off between AAP government and sanitation workers began once again on Thursday. The sanitation workers protested by stripping in front of the Delhi Secretariat demanding funds for the cash deficient Municipal Corporation of the city.

The workers protested against the Aam Aadmi Party led-government for not giving salaries, arrears, and pensions to the sanitation workers on time. "During the previous government, we got the money to buy uniforms with other basic amenities for our children. But since this government has come, we have not received our arrears and pensions. Also the additional perks have been stopped," said Sanjay Gehot, President, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Swachhta Karamchari Union.

The protest started from Raj Ghat and ended at the Secretariat where slogans were raised against the Delhi government and an effigy of the Chief Minister was also burnt. They were stopped by the barricades of Delhi police as they tried to barge in the Secretariat.

The sanitation workers alleged that the government had failed in fulfilling the demands of the sanitation workers and providing financial help to the cash-deficient MCDs.

"The government has utterly failed in giving a long term solution in addressing the problems of the sanitation workers. Deputy CM Manish Sisodia did not meet us after we were called in for a meeting in the secretariat," said a statement issued. The protestors threatened that they would go for a hunger strike and stall work, if their demands are not met.

The face-off between the sanitation workers and Delhi government has been a long going issue with the workers calling strikes and protests and stalling work which resulted in piling of garbage on the streets. Both North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) are cash-strapped, unable to pay salaries of many employees.

A section of the demonstrating sanitation workers have lately been protesting against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) dispensation after the corporations held the Kejriwal government 'responsible' for their financial woes.
