With just Rs 40 in their pockets, two brothers aged 9 and 11 years travelled more than 500 km to reach their maternal grandparents’ house in Rajasthan, leaving their parents in panic and the Delhi Police on its toes.

The 15-hour journey from south Delhi’s RK Puram to Bhilwara was rife with challenges. The students of Class II and III, Ekta Vihar, Sector 6 of RK Puram, were found to be missing by their father early on Wednesday.

After hours of search, their father Goppi, who runs a roadside flower shop, approached the police and filed a missing complaint. A case of kidnapping was registered under IPC section 363 at the RK Puram police station and investigation was started, a senior police officer said.

A police team was sent to various interstate bus terminals and auto stands, while another team went to check railway stations to trace the missing children.

“Thorough questioning revealed that the kids were spotted at the Delhi Cantonment station. Records of trains that passed through the station were checked and the family members were questioned about their relatives in Rajasthan. It was revealed that the kids’ grandparents lived in Vijay Nagar, Bhilwara in Rajasthan. A team under the supervision of SHO Somnath Paruthi was immediately rushed to the location and the kids were recovered,” the officer added.

Talking about their journey, 11-year-old Lucky said: “We boarded a heavily crowded bus so that the conductor could not reach us for tickets. I knew that the Bahri Mudrika goes to the Delhi Cantonment railway station. We managed to stay away from the conductor’s sight. When the bus stopped at the station, we got down and headed towards the platform.”

“We got hold of a man at the platform and asked him about a train which goes to Bhilwara. Guided by him, we boarded the Chetak Express that departed around 8pm. In order to avoid being suspected as a non-ticket holder, we kept changing coaches and even slept for hours in the toilet and below the train berths. Around 6am, an attendant said we had arrived in Bhilwara. We deboarded and took a rickshaw to our relatives’ place in Vijay Nagar,” he added.

They said what prompted them to flee their house was the urge to meet their elder brother.
