Delhiites may have to face traffic snarls on Sunday, as the Public Works Department (PWD) will start repairs on as many as 60 roads in the national Capital. The massive plan aims at strengthening the road network in the city.

The department has set aside a budget of Rs 150 crore for the project, which is expected to finish by March 31. According to sources, in the last few months, there has been no major road repair work in Delhi, following which this decision was taken.

Among roads that are expected to be repaired are Qutub Minar Road, Arihant Marg in front of Azadpur Mandi, Ulan Bator Marg, Pusa Road, Shankar Road, main Burari road, and several others in various parts of the Capital.
“The work on these 60 roads will start on Sunday. We have set a deadline of March 31 to finish the work,” PWD Secretary Ashwani Kumar said.

Meanwhile, to prevent traffic congestion on these roads, the department will consult the Delhi Traffic Police. “Commuters will not face any kind of problem during the repair work. There is a proper procedure in such cases. The traffic police have been well informed about the work. The department will make necessary arrangements, so that the general public does not face any problem,” Kumar added.

Travelling from ITO to Bhikaji Cama Place via IIT and Munirka on February 2, Kumar had carried out an inspection of south Delhi. PWD, which is in the middle of a massive road strengthening and re-carpeting exercise, has come under criticism for the state of roads in the city.

Last year, PWD Minister Satyendra Jain had directed his department to prepare a comprehensive road repair plan. Most roads in the city were re-carpeted or strengthened before the 2010 Commonwealth Games and are currently in an urgent need of repairs.

A proposal to redesign 10 roads was floated by Jain in late 2015. The changes envisioned uniform road width, space for non-motorised vehicles, and footpath improvement.

Meanwhile, the department has also invited suggestions from residents of the neighbouring areas for the layout plan to redesign the 5.8 km Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor project, which was scrapped in February 2016.

The PWD has decided to redesign the road with construction of six subways that would have provision for cafes and shops.

Residents have demanded a reduction in the width of footpaths on BRT stretch and an increase in the width of the carriageway.

In January, representatives of the RWAs had met Jain, requesting a presentation about the major projects in Greater Kailash (GK). During the meeting, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) officials had shared the site map of the GK Metro station, which had one of its entry/exit points at the sharp turn of GK-II, near Savitri Cinema, Ring Road. The residents can reach the Metro station constructed on the other side of the Ring Road using a tunnel.
