Fatima Nafees, the mother of missing Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Najeeb Ahmed, on Wednesday wrote to the Delhi Police, seeking "strongest possible" action against the officials who allegedly leaked misinformation about her son to the media.

On Tuesday, some newspapers had reported that Najeeb was browsing information on Islamic State (IS) before he went missing, citing "highly placed" sources in the Delhi Police. They also mentioned that the police were working with the intelligence agencies to ascertain if he had been radicalised. Later, however, the Delhi Police denied these claims.

"I demand you to investigate who these unnamed sources are in the Delhi Police who are repeatedly leaking news to the press. This latest leak is the most sinister one till date," Fatima said in the letter.

"Having failed to trace my son's whereabouts, the Delhi Police can at least identify and take action against officials who are leaking false information to the press," she added.

Fatima further said: "I am a woman of limited means and poor health. I am pursuing this case against great financial and political odds. Such devious information about links with IS, coupled with raids at my house in the middle of the night, create an atmosphere of fear and panic among my family members."

The 27-year-old first-year MSc student went missing from his hostel on October 15, last year, following a scuffle with some Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members the night before. His mother and brother have been staying at their relative's house in Delhi since then, in a bid to find him.

Recently, the Delhi High Court had pulled up the Delhi Police for the slow progress in the case.
