One shot dead, 2 hurt as fight turns ugly

A fist fight between two groups took a lethal turn when one person was shot dead while two others were injured. Two of the accused has been detained for questioning.

According to the police, the incident took place on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday. They said prima facie it appeared that the victim had gone to attend a friend’s wedding in south-east Delhi’s Ambedkar Nagar area late on Thursday night. He was on his way back home with friends when someone brushed past a man in a group going the other way.

An altercation broke out between the two groups, which soon turned into a fist fight. The groups also pelted stones at each other, damaging the nearby shops. Suddenly, one of them whipped out a pistol and started firing. Three people received bullet injuries.

The Police Control Room (PCR) received a call in this regard around 12.30 am. “The injured were identified as Shekhar Yadav, Vikas Arya, and Harneet Singh. Singh was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (south-east), Romil Baaniya, said. Yadav and Arya are recuperating at the Batra Hospital.

Six accused persons were identified in connection with the case. Sources said the detained persons were identified as Rangeela, who has a previous criminal record, and Ashish. Raids are being conducted to nab the other accused.

A case under Sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 147 (punishment for rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon) and 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at the Ambedkar Nagar police station. Further investigation is on.
